Jens Rathke

Jens Rathke (1769-1855) was a Norwegian naturalist. In the autumn 1798 he arrived in Funchal where he staid until May the following year. His task was to collect plants for the Danish botanist, Professor Martin Vahl.
In 1810 Jens Rathke was professor in zoology at the University in Copenhagen, but in 1813 he went to the new Norwegian university in Christiania (today Oslo) as professor in zoology. He is known as the founder of the botanical garden in Oslo.
Some years ago Rathke’s notebooks from Madeira were found by his papers in the National Library in Oslo. They are now transcribed, edited to be a continuous story and has been translated into English.
To make Rathke’s story more understandable, several footnotes and a short historical supplement have been added.
To learn about the Madeira history, I had to read books in Portuguese, which is difficult for a Norwegian without knowledge in the language. It is therefore of importance that all sorts of misunderstandings can be corrected by those who really know the history of Madeira.
